How to build a brand for your startup, step by step

The seven steps

  1. Write your positioning. One sentence: for [customer] who [problem], [company] is the [category] that [benefit]. Everything else follows this line.
  2. Know your audience. Name the first customer type you will win, what they read and what they distrust.
  3. Pick a tone of voice. Three words with a short rule each, such as "plain: no jargon a customer would not use".
  4. Choose colours. One main colour, one accent and two neutrals. Check the text passes contrast.
  5. Choose fonts. One for headings and one for body text is enough.
  6. Design the logo last. A wordmark that fits the positioning and still reads small on a phone.
  7. Write it down in a brand book. So the next designer, freelancer or agency gets it right first time.

Do it in an afternoon

Astitva follows these steps from a short brief. It writes the strategy, sets your colours and fonts, draws three logo routes and puts it all in a brand book, then designs your pitch deck in the same style.

Questions

How do I create a brand identity for my startup?

Write your positioning first, then define your audience and tone of voice, then choose colours and fonts, and design the logo last. Record it all in a brand book. Astitva does these steps from a short brief, starting free.

How much does startup branding cost?

Agencies often charge lakhs of rupees or thousands of dollars. Astitva starts free with 50 credits, and packs cost ₹299 to ₹1,999 or $3 to $20.

Should a startup logo be a wordmark?

Usually yes at the start. A wordmark spells your name, so people learn it faster, and it is simpler to use across a website, app and deck.
